"It had to do with their 40th anniversary. "Probably I didn’t think about it enough or I wouldn’t have gone down that road," Hardy said.

Since The Residents have managed to remain anonymous since they started in 1974, it seems that one of the biggest challenges that Hardy faced in making the film was how to make an authoritative documentary about an anonymous group.
